Hunger hits 1 of every 4 Bicol clans

LEGAZPI CITY—As the incidence of hunger in the country went back to a record high according to a survey by the Social Weather Stations, results of a church-based survey in Bicol showed that the members of 25 percent of its families went hungry at least once in two months prior to the survey this year.

Of the 25 percent, the survey reported that 18.7 percent said they had experienced hunger only once; 2.9 percent, a few times; 1.8 percent, often; and 1.1 percent, always.

Results of the survey also showed that 51 percent of the families rated themselves poor, 25 percent considered their situation to be worse than before while 21 percent were optimistic their situation would be better three years from now.

The survey was conducted in July and August and covered 400 households each from the the six provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Masbate, Catanduanes, Sorsogon and Naga City.

Fr. Jovic Lobrigo, board chair of the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Legazpi, said the results of their survey localized that of the recently conducted SWS survey, which showed that 2.9 million families in the country found themselves with nothing to eat at one time or another during the third quarter of 2006.
