‘Milenyo’ takes another life

10 October 2006

LEGAZPI CITY—TYPHOON “Milenyo” has been gone for almost two weeks and yet it managed to kill another victim.

Rolando Atento, a lineman of the Albay Electric Cooperative (Aleco), was electrocuted while rushing repairs on power cables destroyed when Milenyo swept through Bicol on Sept. 28.

He and his wife, Fe, would have celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on Oct. 30.

Atento, who was one of 300 linemen working to restore power to Legazpi City residents, died last Thursday when he accidentally touched a live wire at Teacher’s Village along Washington Drive in this city.

He was rushed to nearby Aquinas Hospital but was dead on arrival.

Fe has already accepted her husband’s death, saying it was “part of God’s plan.”

However, she could not help question what her husband went through at work.

“My husband would go home very tired. He was the only lineman in his team,” Fe said in the dialect.

Earlier, Alex Realoza, Aleco general manager, said the cooperative lacked manpower and materials to restore power in Albay after typhoon Milenyo destroyed thousands of electrical poles.

“He would fix around 10 poles everyday and would go home past 7 p.m.,” Fe said.

A coworker of Atento told Fe that when he died at about 11:30 a.m., he was about to have a quick lunch when he touched the live wire. Ephraim Aguilar, Inquirer Southern Luzon
